What Are Black Forest Brownies?

Did anyone say black forest cake? Black forest cake has been and will always be one of my favorite cake flavors of all time! It always surprises me with the amount of people that have never had black forest cake before. It’s such a delicious cake that has so much flavor and taste, made with such little and minimalistic ingredients. If you’ve had black forest cake before, have you had black forest brownies? You’ve probably never had black forest brownies before, well you're in the right place! Black forest brownies are such a fun and easy way to take the flavors of a traditional black forest cake and put them into a brownie. A black forest cake is made with rich chocolate cake layers, filled and decorated with whipped cream frosting and cherries as well as cherry compote, then topped with chocolate shavings. That pretty much sums up this recipe, but the best part is that you don’t have to go through the whole hustle and struggle of decorating a cake. That’s why these brownies are perfect!

Ingredients For Black Forest Brownies

  • Unsalted Butter

  • Brown & Granulated Sugar

  • Eggs

  • Vanilla Extract

  • All Purpose Flour

  • Cocoa Powder: Dutch process cocoa powder is the best to use to achieve a rich and chocolatey brownie.

  • Vegetable Oil

  • Espresso Powder

  • Salt

  • Heavy Whipping Cream: It’s used to make the whipped cream frosting.

How To Store Black Forest Brownies?

These red velvet brownies should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. However, you can also store them covered in the fridge for up to 10 days, but I don’t think they will last that long!

Serving size

  • 1 full tray of brownies.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter

  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 eggs + 1 egg yolk

  • 2 tsp vanilla

  • 1/4 cup All-purpose flour

  • 1 cup cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  • 2 tsp espresso powder

  • 3/4 tsp salt

Whipped Cream Frosting

  • 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Toppings

  • Cherry compote

  • Cherries

  • Chocolate shavings

Instructions

Step 1

  • Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Line a 8x8 square pan with parchment paper and set aside.

Step 2

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, add butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Microwave for 1.5 minutes, stir, then microwave for 30 more seconds. Stir until smooth. To the butter and sugar mixture, add in eggs, egg yolk, vanilla extract, salt. Mix until combined.

Step 3

  • Add the flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder and salt. Slightly mix, then add the vegetable oil. Mix until combined.

Step 4

  • Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, testing for doneness by inserting a knife into the center of the brownie beginning at 20 minutes. It will be done when the edges have set, but when the knife is inserted into the middle comes out with a bit of brownie batter onto it.

Step 5

  • Once the brownie is out of the oven, let it cool for 20 minutes on the counter top before placing in the fridge for about 1 hour to cool completely. The brownies need to be fully cooled before decorating them or else everything will melt.

Step 6

  • To make the whipped cream frosting, beat the heavy cream with an electric hand mixer or in a stand mixer on high speed for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until it has reached stiff peeks.

Step 7

  • To decorate the brownies, add the whipped cream frosting on to the brownies and spread into an even layer all around. Next, add tsp of the cherry compote on top of the frosting, then place the cherries. Lastly, sprinkles the top with chocolate shavings. Enjoy!
